Dr Seuss House in Alaska Green Design, Innovation, Architecture, Green Building

dr seuss house alaska

As one of the top trial lawyers in Alaska, Weidner had a difficult time finding time to work on it. The home is sadly abandoned now, but apparently has a new owner that is planning to renovate it. The result is a 12-story tower that looks like a bunch of mini homes teetering on top of each other, a truly amazing sight in an otherwise uninhabited area. The reason you can see all the mountains across the Inlet is because of their height. Like us on Facebook to get the latest on the world's hidden wonders. A Towering Home in the Alaskan Wilderness Looks Like Something Right out of a Dr. Seuss Book

Next time you are traveling deep in the Alaskan wilderness, keep an eye out for the house that looks like something straight out of a Dr. Seuss book. Willow, Alaska's Goose Creek Tower - also known as the Dr. Seuss house, for obvious reasons - was built by a creative individual who wanted to have the best view possible of Denali. In fact, the owner wanted to be able to see the mountain so bad, that as the trees around the house got taller, so did the house. Now, the bizarre residence is considered to be one of the great architectural feats of America. Willow, Alaska’s Goose Creek Tower – also known as the Dr. Seuss house, for obvious reasons – was built by a creative individual who wanted to have the best view possible of Denali.

Strangely Made Houses In The United States

Deep in the woods of Alaska, there sits a house that locals fondly refer to as the “Dr. Seuss’ House.” One glimpse and you can immediately see why the house gained that appropriate label. The house has a 185-foot-tall skinny tower that resembles layers atop of a wedding cake. The top certainly offers a unique perspective on Alaska, with 360-degree views of (on a clear day) Denali, the Homer Spit, and the start of the Aleutian chain. The owner considers it “a poem to the sky.” He just doesn’t know when it will be finished.

Alaska's Dr. Seuss House is a whimsical tower made of stacked cabins

Renovations were then taken over a by a new occupant to add more stories, and the sky-piercing structure now comprises 12 floors that gradually taper in square footage. You can’t visit the house in person, but if you want to see it, you can get a good view on Alaska’s train north. You could also get the best views hiring a bush pilot and flying overhead. The house is located in the Mat-Su Valley between Willow and Talkeetna. The top of the tower offers 360-degree views and Weidner — who works as one of Alaska’s top trial attorneys — says it’s possible to see for a minimum of 300 miles. You can't visit the house in person, but if you want to see it, you can get a good view on Alaska's train north.

As the story goes, the original owner of this unwieldy building located in Willow, Alaska built his house shortly after a forest fire with a clear view of Mount McKinley and Denali National Park. As the surrounding trees recovered, the pristine view was obscured and the owner decided to add few more stories, eventually spending a decade adding floors until it reached the 12-ish story tower you see today. Seuss House” as the design so closely mimics structures you might see in Theodor Geisel’s illustrated storybooks.

Culture Trip Spring Sale

Initially, this home was planned to be a 40 x 40 foot log cabin. Just how did this eclectic MIT alumni and self-described “frustrated architect” construct this private home as a series of stacked houses placed one on top of another? The higher the house reached, the smaller the floors become… and the more they looked as though they are randomly and haphazardly placed one atop of another. The previous owner spent a decade adding floors, but when he died abruptly, the tower was abandoned for 10 years.

The towering wooden structure resembles a stack of houses, each smaller than the next as it climbs toward the sky. The quirky tower is as weird and wonderful as Dr. Seuss’ unbuilt works, and the townspeople have named it Dr. Seuss House. It is on private property, but you see it by driving by or taking a helicopter tour. As the story goes, the owner originally built the home to get a good view of Denali (Mt. McKinley), American's tallest mountain.

The only reason Weidner stopped when he did is because federal airspace starts at 200 feet, and he didn’t want the home (which he calls the Goose Creek Tower) to violate any laws. The Giesel Library by William Pereira at San Diego State University, almost as much a spectacle as the so-called “Dr. Seuss house,” is named after the legendary storyteller and illustrator himself. The brutalist structure features gravity-defying concrete levels extending from a tapered base.

When she’s not writing or exploring the West Coast, Meg enjoys playing tabletop games, working on visual media projects, and can always be found in the front row at Portland Timbers matches. We'll match you with a local itinerary expert to help you plan your trip. This location is on private property and is presented for information purposes only. UnusualPlaces.org is your guide to quirky, weird, and beautiful places to visit around the world.

Weidner also planned to sit on top and watch the Northern Lights. If you plan on visiting, keep in mind that although the house is virtually abandoned it’s still privately owned and thus on private property. A great way to see it is by driving past it, on a train, or take a ride with an Alaskan bush pilot, which in general is a great way to see the Alaskan countryside. Situated in the small town of Talkeetna, Alaska, the fantastical house is what most of us would describe as something we’ve seen in a Dr. Seuss book. Unlike anything Dr. Seuss wrote about, however, this “house is real, it’s not a fantasy” says Phillip Weidner, creator, builder, and owner of the towering home, which stands 185 feet high. The building is privately owned and the owner isn’t offering tours (it’s still a construction zone, so it’s not safe to enter), but it’s possible to see the house on the train heading north.

Hidden in the sparse woods outside Talkeetna, Alaska, is a bizarrely singular home known by locals as the Dr. Seuss House, though that isn’t what its creator calls it. While this whimsical house has no direct relation to the famed author, it is easy to see how the structure got its nickname. Turns out it was built by Phil Weidner, an Anchorage attorney. He also wants to put in a ham radio station, and broadcast what he calls Radio Free Goose Creek. It was abandoned for a while but now has a new owner who is working on renovations and, hopefully, some reinforcements too.

House Finch Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology

house finch eggs

On average, a pair will produce two successful broods in one nesting season. House finches can lay up to six clutches, but usually, no more than three make it to the fledging stage. For example, house finches nesting in Arizona always utilizes fresh creosote twigs with the leaves still on. Fresh or green plant materials help prevent mites, which is why finches will add more creosote to their nest when mite season is in full swing. Their music is a high, throaty warble with a rising buzz on the finish, whereas the most common name is a pointy, raspy “cheeeep” that may be made whereas perched or in flight. With our knowledge and appreciation combined, we might just be able to provide safe havens for future generations to learn and admire from miles away.

Female

The eggs are a pale bluish-green with few black spots and a clean, considerably shiny floor. This strategy will increase the probability that consultant numbers of each sex will survive. Each clutch of eggs can have between 2-7 eggs, with 4-5 being the average. The incubation period lasts about days, and the nestling period, where baby house finches stay in the nest, lasts about days. However, the male finch feeds the fledglings even after they leave the nest. The baby songbirds follow the dad to food sources, such as backyard bird feeders and millet, and wait as the male bird regurgitates food into their mouths.

Where do house finches nest?

Their range extends from the southern border of Canada across the central Great Plains and the southeastern United States. As a result they may stay longer in their nests during breeding season. A recent study gathered 950 nest records to help answer this question.

Do house finches nest in the same place every year?

house finch eggs

There are no exceptional threats to the house finch, and their population has increased in the last 50 years, unlike many bird species. Their primary risk is disease outbreak that began in the 1990s, which took an initial hit to their population. As with all wildlife, it’s important to be respectful of the house finch and their habitat. Keep your distance from them, maintain the park speed limit, and refrain from feeding them. House Finches may be primarily responsible for raising the young but there are instances where the male plays an important role in raising the young. House Finches may also spend more time in the nest during the day.

Their breeding population is estimated to be 40 million according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey. However this species is only recently arriving in the Eastern United States after being accidentally released from illegal pet shops in New York in the 1940s. From there they spread to the Great Plains where they met their western cousins.

Many people think they are seeing a Red-headed Sparrow Bird. Each male has its own unique song, although there can be regional variations as well. The song is often described as cheerful and musical, with a mix of trills, whistles, and short phrases. Once a crackdown on this illegal trade went into effect, shop owners were quick to release the birds into the wild.

How to Find This Bird

The male usually joins the female in feeding and caring for the chicks. The parents do not start incubating the eggs until the last egg is laid. They continue to feed the chicks even after the birds leave the nest. The oldest house finches lived up to eleven years seven months in the wild but most live only a few years.

Many finches have notched tails but the house finch has only a shallow notch in its tail. The male house finch typically has a red head, breast, and rump, but does not have red coloring on its brown back or wings. Female house finches have blurrier streaks and grayer undersides. The color varies among males, from pale yellow, to orange with bright red (All About Birds). House Finches are not usually aggressive unless put in a confined space with other birds.

What are the types of eggs of house finches

All three species are streaked, and the males of all three have red plumage. The House Finch, the most common and widespread of the three, typically has a red head, breast, and rump, but does not have red coloring on its brown back or wings. Female House Finches have blurrier streaks and grayer undersides than the other two species.

But regurgitating food is a fast way to deliver nutrients to very young birds. Once hatched, baby House Finch broods typically leave their nest in days. While their diet consists primarily of seeds, fruit, and nuts, on rare occasions, they will also eat insects in the summertime. Some flocks of finches travel south to places like North Carolina, while others travel as far down as Mexico. On the other hand, Male Purple Finches have a more subtle and understated red tone with a white underbelly and no streaks of brown. The female House Finch is a little more tricky to identify, as they look more like a house sparrow with a few key differences.

house finch eggs

Adult males are rosy red around the face and upper breast, with a streaks down the belly and on the flanks. We've made this site to make it easier to learn everything you need to know about your favorite songbird species. Our mission is to educate people about songbirds and provide the best resources to help them identify them and contribute to conservation efforts.

They prefer edge habitat and are absent from dense coniferous forests. The House Finches diet mainly consists of plant materials like buds, fruits, and seeds. Some foods they’ll consume in the wild are knotweed, mustard seeds, thistle, poison oak, mulberry, cactus, and other plant species.

The most important site characteristics are protection from above and a solid base to build on. Both sexes have light brown plumage, or feathers, with white and dark brown mottling. However, males have red or rose-colored accents on their heads, necks, and chests. All three species share the taxonomic genus Haemorhous, and the little birds are collectively referred to as American Rosefinches. These little birds live throughout a large portion of North America. It could also indicate that the female is more physically fit and therefore is able to find food and nest successfully.

This makes them great landscapers, and they help keep unwanted plants at bay. Immature/Female House finches have blurrier streaks on the flanks and belly than Cassin’s Finch. Immature/Female House Finches have faint streaks on the flanks and breast, while immature/female Purple Finches have clear streaks on the flanks and breast. The disease causes red, swollen eyes and respiratory problems, which makes birds susceptible to adverse weather and predators.

The nest typically comprises of soft materials, including twigs, string, wool, feathers, and leaves. House Finches nest in a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees as well as on cactus and rock ledges. They also nest in or on buildings, using sites like vents, ledges, street lamps, ivy, and hanging planters. Occasionally House Finches use the abandoned nests of other birds.

We had one bad specialty meal in La Cucina. We returned a subsequent night and it was probably the best meal and service we have had at sea to date so go figure. Our meals in the other specialty venues varied from outstanding to good enough to stay in business as a standalone land based venue.

Again a fantastic day, fantastic tour guide. Could not have asked for better with our tour guide. He was a fantastic story teller and could not have done any better bringing the city to life. After this tour ended we walked to a restaurant our Concierge recommended for Pizza. I had read much about Gritty Naples but I did not concur with what I had read.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Tepenaki was fun but it’s probably a little too loud for me.  It’s hard for me to enjoy casual conversation with table mates with all the noise. Moderno has an incredible salad bar this time around. Wasn’t crazy with the sides and the meats but the salad bar was fantastic.

Also found it fascinating how they kept peace and control for so long. From an educational standpoint a 5 star day. Upon return to Mykonos the town was celebrating Oxi day and getting ready for their parade. I found it strange that we were walking along paths with pottery just sticking out of the ground. There was a grocery store right around the corner from our hotel with yummy stuff and great restaurants everywhere. I also love how nice the romans are to tourists.

Check out these local drinks whilst cruising the Mediterranean. The Local Bar onboard serves frozen cocktails and culinary delights. Take in stunning sights at the dining hall of Norwegian Viva Hudson. The auctions on the Norwegian Star are run by Park West Gallery. If you have ever been to an auction on a cruise, it was probably a Park West auction. On the last day, the kids put on a show in the ship’s theater — it was a much bigger production than I was expecting.

If you want to experience as many places as you can in the least amount of time, a cruise vacation is certainly the way to go. Well the good luck with excursions kind of took a turn here. I didn’t see anything really jump out at me.

While the main buffet and dining room weren’t great, the specialty dining was excellent. A Mediterranean cruise is something I’ve wanted to do for a while. I was so excited when the opportunity finally arose to travel with my family to Italy to start our cruise through the Mediterranean. When you want some "me" time, look no further than Mandara Spa®.

We'll coordinate your roundtrip flights, and transportation between the airport and cruise port. The HOHO busses loaded right in port and we were off pretty quickly. The Archeological museum is probably one of the best museums I have seen to date. Lots of murals and finds from Akrotiri  and subsequent sights seen on this sailing are housed here. If you visit don’t forget to hunt down and see the Antikythera mechanism housed here.

The princess ship we were tagging along with was anchored much closer to town. It was a much smaller ship so that may have been why they got such a close in anchor spot. I did hear a little rumbling about wait for tenders. Likely because we were on an excursion and also stayed in Kotor till well after dark. Venice, Italy is another port where you can just hop off and walk around. I loved just wandering the charming streets, stopping in for pizza and wine along the way. If you’re traveling to Venice with kids, check out these ideas for things to do in Venice with kids.

We had a fantastic time there with each meal better than the last. Or choose to take a gourmet tour of the Chianti Region and San Gimignano which includes a visit to a winery for a tasting. The interesting thing about this cruise was that the first 2 days were in Venice, so the ship stayed in port on Day 2 so guests could explore Venice. We opted to stay on the ship that day and added 2 days in Venice after the cruise was over. Explore the history of the Mediterranean, relax on the waters of the Transatlantic, or feel the balmy breezes of the Caribbean..

We also rented bikes at Bobli gardens one day and enjoyed the park and neighborhood around the gardens. Future visits I would be equally happy staying at a hotel in Trastevere or Ludovisi Rome neighborhoods. Both neighborhoods had a welcoming fun vibe. Continue the gourmet experience back onboard Norwegian Viva where the cuisine is as enticing as the destinations visited. The range of food and beverage offerings from casual fare to fine dining, together with carefully crafted libations and an extensive wine list on all NCL ships is bound to impress. There are more dining options than sea days.
